Simultaneous Membership Program

Simultaneous Membership Program
SMP Cadet – A reserve officer trainee assigned to a Reserve Component Troop Program Unit (TPU), while simultaneously participating as a contracted cadet in the ROTC Advanced Course at a university or college.

The National Guard is a great alternative for financial assistance in lieu of a scholarship. This option, called the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), allows you to pursue your education and receive the financial benefits of a North Carolina National Guard Soldier.

Army National Guard Benefits
100% Tuition Assistance
Monthly Drill Pay ($134 and up after taxes)
$350-$500 per month ROTC stipend (SMP Cadets)
In-State Tuition (All NG Soldiers)
*$329 Monthly G.I. Bill for qualified Cadets*
Most Army ROTC SMP Cadets in the NG or Reserves have the benefits of the military without the worry of being deployed.

SMP Cadet Eligibility
U.S. citizen.
Eligible for enlistment in, or already assigned to, an ARNG or USAR unit.
Has minimum 30 credits towards major and enrolled as a full-time student.
Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.

SMP participants serve in ARNG/USAR units in the rank of “cadet” and receive drill pay in pay grade E-5 (higher, if higher enlisted rank held prior to contracting).
SMP participants who are disenrolled from ROTC advanced Course will return to the grade and rank held prior to SMP participation.
*Qualified Cadets are those that have completed BASIC (Enlisted Boot Camp) and AIT (Advanced Individual Training). Upon completion of both, Cadets may be granted the benefits of the Montgomery G.I. Bill.

Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD)
The GRFD and Dedicated reserve Scholarships are 2-year scholarships available for members of the Army Reserve (AR) and Army National Guard (ARNG) who desire to commission in the Reserve Forces. Applicants must be members of the AR or ARNG and participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) as a cadet. Both scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Students apply for this scholarship during the spring semester of their sophomore year. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a sophomore with 4 to 5 semesters remaining until graduation.
